Firefighters
Project Red Wagon was originally envisioned as an entertainment package that includes poems, songs and videos that celebrate the lives and sacrifices of America's Firefighters and their families. But out of this has developed a larger mission – to include police officers, emergency medical services (EMS), and our nation’s military.
After two visits to the NFFF in Emmitsburg, MD, Paul Hickey from 6 Angels Productions wrote the poem Red Wagon. Then he joined in collaboration with Jason Lucas, who had been working with the Jeremy Graham Band, to create the song. Jason and Paul worked over the phone and via e-mail to create a set of lyrics and music, but now they needed a singer. A very impressive young lady named Jaycie Ward was selected to be the vocalist. They went to Nashville to visit Jason in his studio, and recorded the song. The NFFF Memorial Week committee was so impressed with the song and the singer that Jaycie was invited up to Emmitsburg to perform the song live to a national audience for six consecutive years.
Red Wagon
Everyday, I used to ride in my red wagon
Put on my hat, and I'd pretend to be
A brave firefighter like my father
He's always been a hero to me.
And I hoped one day that I'd walk in his footsteps
Holding a ladder, axe and hose
Fighting fires that come from out of nowhere
I'd ride that big red wagon that everybody knows
Firefighters like a family stand together
Hand in hand, arm to arm, side by side
Holding strong in the face of danger
They're the nations bravest - they're the nation's pride
On the good days they just climb the little ladder
Or polish chrome and share another meal
On the bad days – well, let's just say it's tougher
That's when they know the danger is real
But nothing's more important than the family
This is true at work and in the home
Swelling ranks with new and different faces
Growing ever better as a whole
Firefighters like a family stand together
Hand in hand, arm to arm, side by side
Holding strong in the face of danger
They're the nations bravest - they're the nation's pride
Even though the times are always changing
We're the same deep down inside
Firefighters like a family stand together
Hand in hand, arm to arm, side by side
Holding strong in the face of danger
They're the nations bravest - they're the nation's pride
They're the nations bravest - they're the nation's pride
God bless firefighters
